Leeds warrior faces Doncaster’s Hughie Wilson in red-hot derby showdown July 19
Leeds’ very own Billy Pickles is locked in and laser-focused as he prepares to step through the ropes for a 10-round super lightweight showdown against Doncaster rival Hughie Wilson on Saturday, July 19th at Skate Central, Sheffield – and fans can watch every punch LIVE and FREE on FightZone.
Now boasting an impressive 17-1-0 record, Pickles sees this all-Yorkshire clash as a chance to send a message to the division and put himself in line for major title fights.
You’re back in action for the second time this year – and in a fierce Yorkshire derby. How much are you relishing this clash with Hughie Wilson?
“Staying active is very important in boxing, as well as getting the job done. So, I can’t wait for this fight, especially with it being a massive local derby.”
There’s some history between you and Hughie from sparring – what’s your take on him as an opponent?
“We’ve done a few rounds of sparring but apart from that, I’ve not really seen too much of him.”
The original date for the fight was postponed – has that impacted your preparation or mindset?
“Preparation has been brilliant throughout the camp. It’s a shame the fight originally got cancelled but we’ve always been 100% focused throughout.”
You’ve never been one to lack confidence – what’s your prediction for fight night?
“I can only see it going one way – whether it’s a KO or a points decision… I win!”
Since your sole defeat in 2023 to Lucas Ballingall, you’ve looked better than ever. How much did that fight change you?
“Yes, it’s been a massive learning curve and taught me that I can’t leave any stone unturned. Since that fight I’ve been in with some top opposition and got the job done.”
Finally, what’s the plan for the rest of 2025 – is this the year Billy Pickles makes a title charge?
“I’m not looking beyond Hughie. I’ve got to get the job done on 19th July, then hopefully I’ll be in for some big title fights.”
